Walking pad

I'm writing this while sauntering along on my walking pad. A walking pad is a treadmill that goes under your desk, letting you walk while you work. It's been great.

I'd been pondering one of these for a while. I have chronic back pain that gets worse if I sit or stand in place for very long. Moving around is a great help, so a walking pad seemed like an intriguing addition to my sit-stand desk. Still, I assumed that if I bought one, it'd suffer the typical fate of home exercise equipment: a honeymoon period followed by neglect and abandonment.

So, I held off until I saw a coworker on a virtual meeting who was clearly using one. His head was bobbing side to side, shoulders swaying back and forth. It looked funny, I'll admit. I chatted him immediately after the meeting to ask about it. He said he'd been very happy with it. He'd bought one off Amazon for $170 and it'd been working well for over a year. That was much cheaper than I expected, putting it into the realm of a reasonable experiment. I bought the same one, added the insurance package for another 20 bucks (I never buy those packages, but I know these cheaper units aren't built to last), and waited eagerly for the delivery.

That was back in August, so I've had it for a little over three months. I use it very morning unless I have somewhere else I need to be. I use it in every large meeting where I don't need my camera on. I use it on my weekly video game night with an old buddy.

It's helped me with my back pain. It's also helped with some arthritis pain in my ankle, which I'd worried would get worse because of this thing. I chalk that up to "motion is lotion," "movement is medicine," etc.

Experiment: success.
