Tweaking some styles
I wrote in my Bear Blog questions challenge how I’ve been trying to avoid restyling my blog because it’s a time suck and distraction from actually writing. An hour or so later, I decided that wasn’t quite right.
Yes, for me, web design is a time suck. I’m deeply ungifted at color schemes and layouts, so I end up spinning wheels without a clear direction. This predictably leads to slow, mediocre results.
On the other hand, I also wrote in that post how I want to contribute to the personal, indie, whatever-you-call-it blogging community. How I want to help keep that spirit of the internet alive. A big part of that spirit — a big part of the fun — comes from the wonderful diversity of personal websites.
Opening up a personal website to other people is like inviting them into your home. Imagine if our homes were all the same. That would be a dystopian horror.
So, I changed my tune. Rather than trying my best to resist restyling this site, I prioritized it. I’m diverging from the Bear Blog default scheme, starting with some small tweaks that I can complete in scraps of spare time.
I changed the font for the headings to one that feels like handwriting. I want a vibe of informality and work-in-progress-ness. Also, in dark mode, the title now has some color and a hint of text shadow. I like to think of that title as a neon shopkeeper’s sign lighting up in the night. Cheesy? Sure. But kinda fun.
