Sal's

My kind of social network

I quit social media years ago. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, all of it. I deleted my accounts. They're gone. Unrecoverable. To anyone pondering doing the same: I love being rid of it all and can't imagine going back. But there's a different sort of social network that I stumbled into, having once again started blogging and reading others blogs.

Yesterday, I saw Kev Quirk's latest post pop up in my RSS reader. That post linked to this one from Manu, which in turn linked to this one from Alan Jacobs. I subscribe to Kev and Manu, but I hadn't heard of Alan yet. Now he's in my reader, too.

A day earlier, I read Manu's interview with Herman, the creator of Bear Blog. In that interview, Herman recommended Cory Zue's blog. I checked that out, enjoyed Cory's post on parenthood, emailed him to say as much, and this morning I got a nice reply.

This is my kind of social network. No algorithms, profit models, or urgent posturing for attention. Just individual people having slow, thoughtful conversations, supporting each other, and, hopefully, having some fun on the internet.
